Shalok, Third Mehl: He does not understand himself; he believes the Lord God to be far away. He forgets to serve the Guru; how can his mind remain in the Lord’s Presence? The self-willed manmukh wastes away his life in worthless greed and falsehood. O Nanak, the Lord forgives, and blends them with Himself; through the True Word of the Shabad, He is ever-present. ||1||
(हे भाई! अपने मन के पीछे चलने वाला मनुख) अपने आत्मिक जीवन को (कभी) परखता नहीं, वह परमात्मा को (कहीं) दूर बस्ता समझता है, उस को गुरु के बताये हुए काम (सदा) भूले रहता हैं, (इस लिए उस का) मन (परमात्मा की) हजूरी में (कभी) नहीं टिकता। हे नानक! अपने मन के पीछे चलने वाले मनुख ने झूठे लालच में (लग के) माया के मोह में (फस के ही अपना) जीवन गवा लिया होता है। जो मनुख सिफत-सलाह वाले गुरु-शब्द के द्वारा (परमात्मा की) हजूरी में टिके रहते हैं, उन को परमात्मा ने कृपा कर के (अपने चरणों में) मिला लिया होता है।१।
